Jose R. Aguilar, Jr.
Policy, Politics, and Leadership, UC Berkeley
Jose R. Aguilar Jr. is a doctoral student and former Computational Research for Equity in the Legal System (CRELS) Fellow in the Policy, Politics, and Leadership program at UC Berkeley’s School of Education. His research applies computational social science methods, particularly natural language processing and machine learning, to examine postsecondary decision-making and how institutional discourse, algorithmic systems, and education policy shape access and equity for marginalized students. He particularly studies how public narratives and political language affect reform initiatives, institutional credibility, and students’ journeys after high school. Additionally, he explores how algorithm-driven systems and educational data frameworks impact students’ career trajectories, ambitions, and access to higher education. Before graduate school, Jose was a Computer Science and Math public high school teacher in South Central Los Angeles, where he implemented culturally responsive, project-based STEM instruction. He brings this practical perspective to his current research and policy analysis, always grounding his work in the lived experiences of his former students. Additionally, Jose has contributed to research and advocacy efforts at Education Trust–West, the Campaign for College Opportunity, and the Lumina Foundation, where he supported quantitative research and policy development focused on improving transfer pathways, access, and institutional accountability across higher education systems. Born out of his experience as a first-generation college student, José’s work is driven by a deep commitment to dismantling structural barriers and expanding educational opportunities for underrepresented communities nationwide
