Devyn Elizabeth Brown

Social Work at Howard University

Devyn Elizabeth Brown is a Doctoral Candidate in the School of Social Work at Howard University where he research focuses on the mental health and wellbeing of formerly incarcerated Black men. Originally from San Diego, California, Devyn received her bachelor’s and master’s degree from San Diego State University and graduated with honors. During her first year in the PhD program, Devyn worked as a Research Assistant where she gained exposure to working with qualitative and quantitative data. During her time as a research assistant, she published two manuscripts with her doctoral advisor. Devyn continued to seek out intentionally sought opportunities that would award her abundant exposure to research proficiencies. Devyn served as a Program Analyst Intern with the Government Accountability Office where she refined her research skills. She also served as a Research Fellow at The Sentencing Project where she worked on a qualitative research project conducting semi-structured interviews with more than 50 recently released lifers. Devyn published two manuscripts with senior level researchers while at The Sentencing Project. Devyn receives formal mentorship and coaching from The Black Doctoral Network, and from AIR’s P3 Engage Mentorship Program. In her free time, Devyn enjoys volunteering for community-based organizations that support Black communities. Devyn volunteers for Vehicles for Change, A Father’s Place Prince George’s County, and at her place of worship, Oakland Baptist Church. Currently, Devyn is an AIR Opportunity Fund P3 Fellow where she receives additional support and resources to aid her in completing her doctoral degree.
